Cay is our Pet of the Month. His owner and handler is Amy Franck. Cay came from Holland where he learned commands in Dutch. He was brought to the US to Riverside, CA to be picked to work with law enforcement. Amy also went to Riverside to a class to be trained with a bomb sniffing K-9 in August of 2005. Eventually Cay and Amy met and Amy chose Cay to work with. Together they came home to Colorado. Cay was trained as a bomb sniffing dog for the Park County Sheriff’s Department and worked with Detective Amy Franck. They mainly did training with K-9 officers at the Colorado Springs airport.
In August of 2006 he met a porcupine for the first time which almost cost him his life. He had a quill in his chest cavity that collapsed a lung. Cay had to undergo emergency surgery. He made a full recovery, but had to cancel his appointment to get the last of his stitches out because of heavy traffic. That was the day of the Platte Canyon High School shooting.
Because of the stitches in Cay’s stomach he never got to work that day. After the shooting, Amy and Cay worked at Platte Canyon High School providing security. They also worked at Deer Creek Elementary in Bailey where the kids loved Cay.
In the spring of 2010, a movie crew was in Park County shooting a story about a fugitive from several years prior. They needed a K-9, so Cay and Amy helped with the show. Cay’s debut was on May 13th, 2010 on the Fugitive Chronicles that aired on A&E.
Away from work Cay loves to play, chase rabbits and play hide and seek with Amy’s niece. Just recently, Amy and Cay have started a new chapter in their lives and have moved to Iowa. We at Cottonwood Vet wish the very best for both Amy and Cay.
